Past Classes
Coptic Bookbinding
26 November: noon
The coptic structure is a non-adhesive exposed spine binding. It opens flat and makes a lovely journal or sketchbook for yourself or as a gift.
Lecture and demonstration covers:
- supplies and suppliers
- prepping the text block
- sewing in the coptic style
- design considerations
Students will leave class with one finished binding and step-by-step instructions.

INSTRUCTOR BIO
**Visiting Tutor from USA**
Richenda Brim runs Clementine Press: a one-woman letterpress show in Los Angeles creating small-batch paper goods and limited edition prints from original designs. All of her work is printed one-by-one from vintage wood & metal type on a Chandler & Price pilot press and a Showcard Signcard proof press.
Her letterpress work has been featured in the Little Book of Letterpress, the February 2006 issue of Computer Arts Projects and on the following design blogs: Design*Sponge, Poppytalk, SFGirlbyBay, and Conversation Pieces. Her artist books have been exhibited at the San Francisco Public Library and the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, California.
In addition to her letterpress work she teaches a suite of bookbinding classes: coptic, stab binding, and case binding. Her teaching philosophy is firmly rooted in the D.I.Y. movement. She believes you can make wonderful books by hand with tools you find around your house using the best supplies you can afford.
Print Your Own Holiday and New Years Cards
2 December: noon - 6pm 4 December 10 am - 5pm
Do you always intend to make your own seasons greetings and then resort to buying cards at the last minute, instead? This year, Alphabet City is coming to the rescue! We’re pulling out our wood & metal type and old line cuts to help you letterpress print your cards. Everyone can participate and you’ll create a unique set of personalized greeting cards.
